Mary McPherson is an Anishinaabe artist and legal academic from Couchiching First Nation. She works primarily with charcoal and graphite to create immersive drawings as a form of community-based action against hegemonic power. Her research examines the intersections of Anishinaabe philosophical and legal revitalization, constitutionalism, self-determination, and arts-based legal research creation. Mary is currently completing her doctoral studies at Queen’s University on the role of Anishinaabe philosophical revitalization as a form of refusal against colonial politics of recognition.
Mary has earned a Master of Laws from Queen’s University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa, and an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lakehead University. She has worked in research and teaching capacities at the Ontario Native Women’s Association, the Royal Military College of Canada, and Lakehead University.
